DIY Vintage Inspired Hairpins

DIY Vintage Inspired Hairpins

I just don’t know what gets into me! One minute I’m cruising the net for an item to buy and the next minute I’m planning to make it myself! Out of all my ‘Make It’ ideas, I think this project created the best outcome. These hairpins are so cute and unique! So, lets get started…

I bought some hairpins with glue pads (the little flat circle) in silver and a bag of mixed colour ones from eBay. There’s a huge range on eBay and they are really cheap, especially if you buy in quantities (100 for as low as $3). I also bought some alligator clips and some bird shaped and peony cabochons in mixed colours from eBay.

I hit a few local op shops and bought all sorts of bits and bobs; earrings (pierced & clip on), brooches, necklaces and a sort of charm bracelet. Most of it was super cheap and if you’re buying a few things, you might get a deal. I was looking for things that would have a flat spot to glue the pin to.

I did some research and the best glue for this type of thing is E600, so of course I grabbed some from eBay. You have trust me, I am not getting paid by eBay, I just tend to look for things there first! E6000 is quite string so please read the instructions carefully and make sure you work in a well ventilated area. You’ll also want to leave things to dry over night so, keep that in mind when you choose your work space. We covered our work area in junk mail to protect the surface.

I found these old pliers in Mummy Asks toolbox and used them to remove the backs of earrings and separate charms from chains. We laid out all our bits and started to make little combinations. It became clear that we would need some sort of metal plate to support some of our combos. We made an emergency dash to the local scrapbooking store Charlottes Web and grabbed a few metal bits and pieces.

Then we were on to gluing! It wasn’t too messy and we weren’t entirely sure what we were doing but we glued the combos together and let them dry for several hours. Overnight would probably have been better but we are impatient! We then carefully glued on the hair pins or alligator clips and let them dry overnight. And then we had these:

These pins came out so nicely! A great use for junk jewelry that’s cluttering up your drawers, re purpose a broken and well loved item and an excellent way to wear op shop bling. This sort of hairpin could even be one of your elements in the power of three in your outfit. And what a great way to tie in a theme like Halloween, sports colours or Christmas. I think they’d make a great gift too. That is if you can bear to part with them! Would you be interested in doing something like this?
