I was lucky enough to snag two free tickets to the launch and ‘Meet the Maker’ event for Poppy the Frenchie Grenache Rosé at Two Sisters Food & Wine on Goodwood Road last weekend. And who do you take to a wine event? Your Mum of course! Which turned out to be the perfect choice, not just because Mum is a great photographer but it turns out that the women behind this wine are an amazing mother daughter duo! When Paige (Paggy) Cooper and mum Julie were in France drinking a dry rosé, they realised there was a gap in the Australian market for this type of wine and the rest is history!
I love a crisp dry wine and I have to admit that I wasn’t sure I could really enjoy a rosé but I went along to the event with an open mind. The second I had my first sip, I knew that this was a rosé I could love! Beautifully, crisp and dry. It really wasn’t at all what I was expecting and that is a very good thing. Since I won’t pretend to be the sort of person who can describe wine, I did the right thing and asked the winemaker! Paggy says,
Tasting notes:
- Vibrant blush colour
- Fragrant strawberry & cream, and light cherry notes on the nose
- Light bodied, with great length and refreshing hit of acid
- Dry style, French-inspired
The wine paired beautifully with the delicious spread that Two Sisters created. I mean just feast your eyes on those photos! I had this pea, mint, dill and feta dip that was so very, very good. I had the absolute pleasure of chatting with Nicole (the older of the Two Sisters) about her lovely food and the wine. Two Sisters was a perfect venue for this event. Lots of coyt corners and the sort of fun, eclectic vibe that a wine named after a fancy dog deserves. The whole vibe was friendly, classy casual and yet smoothly managed. I really admire small venues that can take the onslaught of an event in their stride. I am reasonably local and will definitely be back to Two Sisters again. They seem to have lots of interesting functions and happenings. If you are passing by, you should totally call in for a bite and bevvy. Two Sisters is on the corner of Goodwood Road, right near the beautiful old Capri Theatre.
As Poppy the Frenchie is a brand new wine (those who attended were the very first tasters!) I was keen to find out more about the brand and of course, meet Poppy the Frenchie the dog in person. Poppy was just a gorgeous dog and she behaved with good grace, despite being a little confused by the crowd. Honestly, how can you not be excited to meet a dog friend? Especially a famous wine dog! I got some pats and some pics and loved every furry minute! Then came the speeches and for once I was eager to hear them and get the background on this wonderful wine. Again, I am going to hand over to Paggy for an overview.
About the vineyard:
- 50-80 years old, well established hand pruned Grenache vines
- Family owned
- McLaren Vale South Australia
Winemaking style:
- Handpicked in the cool morning into small buckets, preserving the berry integrity
- Juice remained on skin for 3 hours, cold settled to preserve aroma
- Fermented at a cooler temperature and fined with vegan products
I came along to this event with no idea what to expect from the wine. Our tickets allowed us to two glasses each of Poppy the Frenchie and a pick at the gourmet platter. The wine was just so lovely, Mum and I purchased a bottle to drink during the event and ordered some to be delivered to our homes later. Our order arrived in just a few days later! In the future Poppy the Frenchie may be distributed via other stockists but if you would like to give it a try, you can email poppyfrenchie@outlook.com for details.
I hope you have enjoyed this post. I always love seeing the events that people go to and hearing about new things. I honestly really enjoyed the wine and found it such a refreshing take on rosé. It was lovely to have a pink drink that wasn’t a sickly sweet and was refined, elegant and so right for a hot Aussie summer. And I found a new spot for girls afternoon or some picky bits and wine with Mr Ask!
