I am absolutely obsessed with those ‘What I Eat in a Day’ videos and blog posts. It’s so voyeuristic. Plus it’s a great way to get recipe ideas. Lots of those meals are improvised and I am interested in what people put together. Seeing as I am vego, I mostly check out vegan ones and they are pretty damn healthy. How anyone can have just 3 squares of chocolate? I think its one thing to share recipes but seeing how and why people do what they do is interesting to me. So, I decided to document my day in food for you. To be honest, most days I just don’t eat enough to do this kind of thing. I am seriously naughty. I am all about black coffee for breakfast and skipping lunch or eating whatever is around, which is usually hummus and something. I don’t really get hungry and when I do, it’s late. Like 4pm and I’m about to prep dinner anyway. I always eat a decent dinner though. That said, weekends are different. They are all about leisure and relaxing. There is time for prepping, cooking and eating all day. Sometime we focus the whole day around food. Mr Ask will make tortillas from scratch and I’ll prep a bunch of sides and we will have a Mexi-weekend. We graze our way through the weekend, with movies and stuff. Or we will get out and about. And any Adelaidian will tell you that eating and drinking is what you do when you go out here! Restaurants, pubs, markets and festivals. We do food here!
Without further ado, this last Sunday in food…
Breakfast – Coffee & Avo Toast
No talking, no thinking before coffee! I had two coffees (no milk, sugar or sweeteners) from my pod machine while I watched some YouTube vids. It takes a while for my brain to click in, I’m non verbal until the coffee set in. I like to take it slow most days but especially on Sundays.
Time for a little breakfast. Two slices of pumpkin seed dark rye toast, spread with a little Vegemite. Topped with some left over guacamole from the fridge. Just 2 mashed avocado, 1/2 small red onion chopped, 8 cherry tomatoes chopped; the juice of a big juicy lemon and a little S&P. I spooned on the guacamole and cracked a little extra black pepper on top. I had glass of soda water to wash it down.
We decided to head out, so I grabbed a can of coke for the road. I’m permanently thirsty, I always have coke zero handy. I’m not really into sweet, so I prefer the taste of zero. Everyone thinks I’m crazy but it’s true.
Lunch – Paella & Juice
A little food shopping at The Market Shed, which also has good lunch options. Mr Ask and I decided to share a vego paella. It was a good decision, it was delicious and a pretty generous serve. I never miss the opportunity to have a fresh juice, so we got a juice. Mr Ask chose this one, he said it was called ‘roots & fruits’. Definitely beetroot, ginger, citrus and maybe apple? It was a beautiful juice blend. I am really into ginger drinks at the moment. Once the juice was done, I picked up another coke zero – I told you, permanently thirsty.
Snack – Vegan Ice Cream & Soda
We decided to check out Everything Vegan on the way home. I like to check out specialty shops to see if they have anything interesting. We bought some meat substitutes and some lentil pies. I was excited to see they had Cocowhip (vegan soft serve) and had to try it. I adore coconut and all things coconutty. I think it tastes like coconut froyo and I could eat it by the bucket full! Serious. I would have bought a second one but I didn’t eat it until we were in the car L. I thought it would be full of coconut fat but I googled it and it’s pretty healthy. Mr Ask wasn’t wowed but he has a super sweet tooth. He can have his Ben & Jerrys, I’m inspired to try some of the non dairy ice creams in the supermarket. I see a new obsession beginning….
I was dying of thirst when we got in, so I started drinking a 1.25L bottle of soda water while I was putting away the shopping. I really, really, really like bubbles in my water. I always have soda in my fridge. I spent the rest of the afternoon laying in front of the TV and snuggling the cats and I managed to finish of the bottle before making dinner.
Dinner – Buddha Bowl & Vegan Satay
I’ve been tinkering with a satay sauce/dressing for a while and I think I got it perfect tonight. It was so good on this Buddha bowl! I just threw together a packet of brown & wild rice with some capsicum, broccoli, carrot, celery and edamame. Such a good, simple dinner. P.S. I’ll be posting that peanut sauce recipe soon It’s published here. Mr Ask was keen to try the vegan ‘chicken’ satays, so we cooked those up too. The directions said to pan fry but Mr Ask wasn’t keen on the texture when cooked that way, he felt they needed crisping. So we pulled out the trusty deep fryer and gave them a quick fry instead. I am not one for faux meats but Mr Ask thought they were 100% better deep fried and felt they were super close to the real thing. I wasn’t brave enough to try, so I have no opinions.
Dessert – Tea & Cake
Every now and then I grab one of these cakes filled with jam & cream from the supermarket. They’re like eating sweet air, they’re so light. Mr Ask kindly brought me a slice (okay, a ¼ of the cake) and a cup of ‘pink’ tea as I call it. It would have been rude not eat it. Which I did before taking a picture because I was tired and I’m a terrible blogger. I did find you the product pics but they make it look much fancier than it is. Mr Ask was kind enough to make me a second cup of tea, since I was busy letting the cats lick some cream remnants off my fingers and disturbing the cats is unthinkable! Then it was time for bed for this blogger.
Well, that was what I ate this Sunday! I hope you have enjoyed this post and seeing what I got up to food-wise. Let me know if you would like to see this sort of post again xxxxx
