This is my third year of Me Made May (MMM) and this year I have pledged to wear three Me Made items per day for the duration of May (if you want to know more, my pledge post has more info on my pledge and MMM). I have come a long way from my first project four years ago. Sewing got me hooked on making things myself and personalizing everything! Which means I am including sewing projects, refashions, heat transfer transformations and all sorts of DIY accessories, bags and adornments. I am posting my outfits daily to facebook, instagram and of course the official flickr group. So please, follow along and let me clog your feed with my OOTD! If you would prefer a more concise version, I will be posting a wrap up like this each week.
For those of you who are DIY or sewing oriented, I have links to the projects (where possible). And for those of you who are terrified to put needle to fabric or get out the glue, I hope you find inspiration! As I say, I have only been sewing for four years and I am aspiring to a 100% me made wardrobe one day. But I am proof that you can definitely start making now and be ready to participate next year. I really love how MMM makes me mindful about what I’ve made – coming up with new combos and ways to make items more usable. I also love how it makes me mindful about what I have, what I need and how to prioritize my making. I always save the photos I share through MMM to folder on my phone. It makes a great reference when I can’t think of what to wear! So let’s see what I threw on this week….

Okay, so are you sensing some themes after seeing a week in my outfits? I am very fond of cherries. They are sort of frou frou like flowers but without the frou. I am also big on red as a colour. I am super matchy matchy because I think a little matching can look coincidental and I like that twee overboard thing. And there is a lot of accessorizing going on – brooches, headscarves and hair do-dads. That’s just the way I like it!
This is pretty much my usual outfit styling. Every day is a new opportunity to show my flair. I do get occasional looks from strangers and even the odd photo or pointed finger from a group. I never mind. I assume other people are interested, admiring or simply trying to take it all in. But on day three this week I was in Marion (a huge shopping mall, for the out of towners) and had several interesting, outfit based encounters! I was getting so many stare type looks, I had to ask Mum if my headscarf was falling off! But then we passed a woman in full retro get up – brown T bar shoes, navy full circle skirt and cardi with a pineapple print blouse and tote. The woman and I exchanged a nod of approval and cheeky grins. Last of all, an elderly man approached me and asked me about the cherries on my jumper, saying “I’ve never seen cherries on a jumper before! It takes me back decades. They seem glittery, may I take a closer look?”.
All in all, it was a somewhat strange experience. I think I normally shop in smaller stores where staring would be perceived as rude but in a huge mall setting, a stare directed at an anonymous stranger is well, anonymous. Mum did point out that almost everyone was wearing track pants/leggings/stretchy comfort clothes and they may not have seen someone actually dressed in a while. Its food for thought as we roll on to another week of Me Made May!
