Sew: Bow Knot Hair Ties {Quick To Sew, Easy For Beginners & Great As A Gift}

December 5, 2016

Ahhh! Finally a cute and useful way to use up scraps! You hardly need any fabric for these awesome hair tie bows. Most scrap projects leave me cold but these are just awesome! I’m pretty into hair adornments, as you know from my hair pins or my fruits & flowers hair piece or my no dent hair elastics or my headscarves… I wear something decorative in my hair pretty much every day. These bows are very wearable and fairly subtle. I love the idea of having a matching hair tie for every outfit. It suits my matchy matchy soul. I see many of these in my future…

There is so much to love about this project. It’s quick, easy and beginner friendly. It can be done by hand, which can be a nice way to spend the evening and keeps this accessible. I also happen to think these would make a lovely gift for kiddos and ladies alike. Team it up with some of my other hair bits and you have a super gift! But let’s make these first…

For each bow, you’ll need:

  • Two pieces fabric 9″ long by 2″ wide
  • One hair elastic

  1. Lay the two strips right side together and round off each of the short ends. You can trace a shape to cut around or just eyeball it like I did. You should be left with something like this above.sew-bow-knot-hair-ties-sew
  2. Start sewing near the middle of one long side. Sew close to the edge, about 5mm with a straight stitch. If you have trouble with the curves, slow down and pivot as often as you need. After a few of these, you’ll be pro at curves! Sew all the way around but leave a  5 cm turning gap. sew-bow-knot-hair-ties-clip
  3. Trim any threads and clip into the fabric around the curves. Clip close to the stitch line but not through it. Turn right sides out through the gap and gently poke out the curves.sew-bow-knot-hair-ties-finished
  4. Now you have three choices of finish. You can press and topstitch all the way around the bow to close the gap. If you’re not super comfortable with curves, you might want to skip the topstitch because it will be hard to make it neat. So you can finish the gap with hand stitching or just leave it. Gasp!!! Yep, you can just leave it! It won’t be seen once you tie the bow, so that’s what I did. Cheeky but it works.

    So there you go! A gorgeous handmade hair tie in minutes! If you have been looking for something gorgeous and handmade that can be made in bulk, I highly suggest this. You could make heaps in a single afternoon! Of course my stash is groaning with fabric but you don’t even need fabric scraps. You could make these out of garments you no longer wear or men’s ties or old scarves. However you make yours, I’d love to see them xxx
