Before you ask – No, I’m not having a baby! As it happens, a dear friend of Mummy Asks (& friend to me too) is a brand new Grandma. Congrats, Lyz! I also wanted to sew something for my cousins new baby boy Max. Hi Chy! These new little humans arrived only a few days apart. Congratulations to all concerned!
Baby clothes are so cute and tiny! I just had to sew something for the new arrivals. I whipped out a few pairs of baby leggings in minutes using this pattern. The patter has a 1cm seam allowance. It came with a construction tutorial but as usual I did things my own way! I made a few changes to the original, I sewed everything but the waistband with the overlocker.
To get the cute band around the leg (and therefore hem the legs using the overlocker) I lengthened the legs by 1.5cm and hemmed them first, using this method.
I also positioned the tag on the outside, so it wasn’t scratchy. The tag is less for branding and more about telling back from front when you’re half awake. I even put them in my own clothes now, after I wore a skirt backwards for the best part of a day without noticing, tags seemed a good idea!
I also did the waist bands differently. I did some exhaustive research (okay, I just called The Bestie) and found that Mummas hate untwisting twisty waistbands after washing. Twisted waistbands are lumpy and uncomfortable but I didn’t want raw edges or the elastic to sit directly on the skin. I cut my elastic to 32cm plus seam allowance. So I pressed the top edge about 1/2 a cm and tucked my (1.2cm wide) elastic and zig zagged the elastic on, catching the folded over fabric. like this
Then I folded that over again and zig zagged everything down again. This is how it looks on the inside.
These turned out super cute and were very quick to sew. Will you give these a try?
