This skirt was such a surprise. You see, I’d been looking for a yoked skirt pattern like this for a while with no luck. I was on the phone to The Bestie, whining about wanting to make a skirt like this when I stumbled upon this pattern drafting tutorial. The tutorial starts with a straight skirt pattern. I didn’t have a straight skirt pattern that I knew fitted but I did have a simple A line skirt pattern I thought I could modify. I was feeling brave and enthusiastic, so I modified my A line and followed the pattern tutorial. I cut out the skirt straight away.
The next day when I came to sew the thing, I was feeling much less confident. I’d never made a skirt with a yoke or pockets before. The tutorial was very clear but did not come with sewing instructions. I spent a little time working out the sewing order and got started.
The whole way through I was sure that something catastrophic would go wrong or that the finished skirt wouldn’t fit. When I tried it on, still unfinished but looking much more like a skirt, I just stared in awe. It was everything I was hoping for! See, look how excited I am!

I made a few mistakes and learned a few things for next time but I couldn’t be happier with the little skirt that could. Have you pleasantly surprised yourself like that? What have you attempted thinking you would fail but ended up working wonderfully?
