You may recall that I am at the very beginning of my learning to sew journey and trust me it’s baby steps! I needed a pincushion but there was no way I was going to buy a gorgeous creation of someone else’s when I could try making one myself. I found the ideas for these two pincushions on Pinterest and thought I’d try a sew and a no sew version so even the non sewers can have a go. The point of sewing for me is to be able to make the things I want and I saw this as a good place to start and practice my skills.
This one is based on the mason jar idea here. I do love mason jars but they aren’t so easy to get here so I used a cheap spice container (a similar one shown here) from my local $2 shop. Cheap is great because the clear part of the top was plastic, not glass and was poorly glued in and really easy to pop out. Other than that I just followed the tutorial.
This one is surprisingly easy but also good for practicing skills like sewing straight seams and hand sewing. Also, it’s a challenge to work with small things. Small as it is, it still needs a pattern, cutting, pressing and pinning – I really want to come to like these enjoy these aspects of sewing! I followed this tutorial to make it. I am insanely proud of this pincushion and love the way it turned out. I hope it is my sewing companion for years to come!
These are not only great projects to make yourself or with older children, they make excellent gifts for any occasion. Or like me, you could keep them for yourself and admire them as you sew.

After seeing these gorgeous pincushions I am off to buy the fabric and make my own. I am going to make these as teacher gifts this year. Thanks!
