Ask Sarah Hearts The Australian Sewing Guild!

November 21, 2013

Ask Sarah Hearts The Australian Sewing Guild!

I’ve been a member of the Australian Sewing Guild (ASG) for about a year now. In fact I’m on the Marketing Team and the National Sewing Month Team (Sewing MAYhem, May 2014). And I just love, love, love the ASG!!

You might be wondering why being part of the ASG is so wonderful….

Once you join you can attend any (or as many) sewing groups in Australia & New Zealand. Some groups meet weekly, some fortnightly or monthly. Mostly members bring along some sewing/pattern drafting/cutting to work on but some meetings will have special events, guest speakers or themed days. Each group works out what they want to do!

There is nothing quite like speaking with a group of people who are just as passionate about sewing as you are. For me it was like quenching a parched thirst,  as very few people I know sew or sew the kinds of things I do. I reveled in it! All the barriers melted down in 5 mins. There were people of all ages and skill levels, all with different sewing bents. I thought I might not be skilled enough but the ASG really is for everyone who sews. I had a burning pattern drafting question that I  spent hours googling that was answered in a snap. Even though I’m a newbie I shared some stretch sewing techniques that others hadn’t tried and wanted to know about.

Mummy Ask is slowly learning to sew and is also a member and just attended her first meeting. She says, “I came away with a sense of acceptance & being a shy person, felt I had to make no effort to be one of the group. People were eating the lunch they had brought with them, tinkering with various projects or just sitting & chatting casually. Conversation was easy, enthusiasm a definite and generosity to help solve any problem that came up was universal. In other words a true team open to all sorts if inclusion! When asked will you come back again and sew with us, I said yes! Because I really, really, really wanted to!”

I think a lot of people think ‘fusty’ when they hear the work Guild but Guilds have been around since the middle ages, these artisan groups were formed to share knowledge with their members and The ASG is dedicated to this tradition. Take advantage of our collected wisdom! If you thought you didn’t know enough about sewing or didn’t sew well enough to join the ASG, I can tell you, you couldn’t be more wrong!

The ASG has a kick ass new website, a Pinterest board that’s growing like crazy and a Facebook page with lots of juicy updates. I want to give a special shout out to the amazing gals in the Plympton Sewing Circle (my group) for fearlessly following me into the uncharted waters of the Adelaide Fringe Festival and working so hard at short notice (so much more on this to come).
Come and check our the ASG and see how sweet sewing can be! I know I’ve been a little evangelical but I’m not being paid or enticed to write this I’m just that excited! Do you belong to a Guild? Would you? Hit me in comments or on Facebook xxx
