I’m sure you’ve seen this style of hair tie around. They’ve become super popular because they don’t damage your hair or put that ponytail ‘crease’ in it either. Plus they’re really cute, which means you can wear a spare on your wrist and it looks sweet. I’ve seen some of the patterned or foiled ones sell for far to much, like $12 for a pack of three! This is DIY is much cheaper and you can choose elastic that suits your style. Not to mention how deadly easy they are to make.
You don’t need much for this at all. You will need fold over elastic (F.O.E) of your choice. You’ll find black & white in Spotlight and some sewing stores might have a small selection but eBay has a dizzying array! Since I’m putting this up close to Christmas, I’ll take this opportunity to remind you to narrow your search to Australia (or whatever country you’re in) or it won’t get to you in time for Christmas! I just used what was kicking around my sewing room. I also used Fray Check to seal my cut edges (Spotlight or a sewing or craft store will have this) but a candle flame or lighter works too. Other than that you’ll just need a ruler & scissors to make the ties. I used plain white card and washi tape to package them.
The actual doing is very simple… Measure & cut 10″/25cm for an adult hair tie or 8″/20cm for girls. Apply a thin bead of fray check to each cut end (or carefully & lightly melt them with a flame). Allow the fray check to dry for a minute or two. Hold the two ends together (wrong sides together) and tie a knot. Pull it nice & tight annnnd you’re done!
My packaging was super simple too. I used a ruler to mark out 3″ x 4.5″ sections of white card and cut them out. Once my hair ties were slipped on, I decided things looked a little plain. If you were giving these a a gift, you could use a metallic pen or marker to write a message but I just put a piece of pretty washi tape on mine. I thought about going to get some cellophane bags (my cheapy shop has them) but it was just too hot.
I’m really pleased with these. They were made from things I already had on hand and were a nice quick project for a Sunday afternoon. I was thinking of hanging on to these for quick gifts but I can make more in moments. So I think I’ll share these with the girls in my family. They can think of it as a bonus for putting up with my blogging and obsessive photo taking! If you’re inspired to make these are homemade gifts, they would pair nicely with my nail polish hair pins or the fancier ones I made. Happy making!! P.S. If you make, pics please!
