Curling Capers {My Quest for Vintage Inspired Hair}

September 16, 2013
Curling Capers {My Quest for Vintage Inspired Hair}
I’ve worn my hair pretty short for the last 5 years or so. It has a loose natural curl that is beautifully enhanced by lots of layering.  I’ve been growing it for 18 months and finally the shorter layers are long enough to play with! And I’ve really been playing with it lately! I never intended to post about this so you will have to excuse the first pic with my face blurred out, my expression should not be seen! If you are interested in trying out some actual vintage hair styles, you should definitely check out the tutorials made by the wonderful Ashely from Lisa Freemont Street. She prefers cold sets like pin curls and overnight rollers but I just can’t make a neat pin curl and sleeping in rollers is not for me. If I do get into those methods, I’ll tell you how I go.
The headband curling method looked easy enough. I tried it once, with mousse and the hair wound quite loosely (sorry, no pic) and it looked no different to my straight out of bed hair. So the second time I put mousse in dry hair and wrapped the hair tightly and….I woke up with a fro! This pic is the only evidence as I washed this straight out. Could be good for a costume party right?

Next I tried hot sticks, I used a VS Sassoon set that has quite a few more sticks than the ones Ashley uses here. I sprayed with Garnier Fructis Style Curl Control Thermo-Active Spray and put in the hot sticks. I quite liked the effect but it wasn’t quite what I was going for.

Then it was onto hot rollers, I have a set of Remington Express 10 rollers that have 5 medium and 5 smaller rollers. I sprayed with the Garnier spray before rolling and sprayed with hairspray once unrolled and brushed through. This was closer to what I was going for but I still wanted more volume.

In my final version I did everything the same as for hot rollers but also used a set of huge hot rollers too (VS Sassoon Big Curls, I think they’re discontinued). I put the huge rollers in my fringe and crown. That’s making me happy!

As you’ll note, my blue streaks are fading to grey in the pics, I’m off to the hairdresser this week to get a new colour, maybe pink. I know you guys love to hear about the fails as well as the wins. That’s why I couldn’t resist showing you how these methods compare. I hope you’ve enjoyed my little hair journey. Please tell me what you think of these styles, which one’s your favourite? Do you have a fave curling method? What works for you?
