I love this project! How sweet are these silver eggs? I took a gazillion pics trying to capture them but honestly, they’re much more amazing in real life. Mummy Ask bought some silver leaf for another project we are working on and when I saw that you could buy wooden eggs (did you know that?), I knew this had to happen! Plus neither of us had actually used silver or gold leaf before and starting small seemed right.
We hadn’t bought any size yet (the glue for silver or gold leaf) so we tried Mod Podge. It was okay but I would definitely get size in future. Some are bit scrappy but they’re still quite charming. These things are a learning curve! I found the silver leaf and wooden eggs on eBay but a craft store might have them too. My research says imitation leaf is fine and cheaper! Now, the wooden eggs are reusable for many years, so we shellacked (left over from another project) them for longevity. But if you wanted to use boiled eggs and give them as gifts, skip the shellac. What a swizzy Easter egg!
We started out by covering the kitchen bench in a plastic party tablecloth. A good call because it did get messy! And then we used painters tape to mask off where the leaf would go. Using a foam craft brush, we painted mod podge where the leaf needed to go and gently applied the leaf. We used one sheet per egg. Then we set them aside to dry for 1/2 – 1 hour.
We used one of the foam brushes to gently remove excess leaf. It worked but a soft brush would have been better. We carefully carried the tablecloth to the bin and shook it out. We laid the eggs on baking paper and spritzed with a light coat of shellac and let it dry for 30 mins. Then it was time to flip them and do the other side. Using a fresh sheet of baking paper helps to stop the shellac pooling under the eggs. After 30 mins we brought them in to finish drying overnight.
That’s it! You have fabulous silver eggs to play with! I had fun putting them all around the house. I think they’re so pretty and will last for many Easters to come. And both boiled or wooden eggs, covered in shiny leaf, would make an elegant gift. How nice would they look in a square gift box, with a pretty scarf forming a ‘nest’ and these handmade beauties nestled within? The perfect gift for someone with eveything. If you give this a go, I’d love to see your pics! If you are looking for more Easter posts, I have a round up here. It features all the recipes you see below. Have a marvelous Easter!!!
