These are a super easy way to add a little gore to your house for Halloween! Imagine how cool they would look group on a little table by the front door. Or if you are attending a Halloween party they would make the perfect hostess gift. If you want to amp up the gore, you could add a few black nails or tacks or plastic spiders (just don’t put them where they will melt) or other small bits of Halloween decor. And if you are worried about burning the house down, you could always use those LED pillar candles that have a waxy exterior in place of regular ones. Then you can keep them for next year.
I’d love to say that the best thing about this DIY is that it’s easy to make and uses easily available objects. White pillar candles are everywhere and pretty cheap, I picked mine up from my local cheapy shop. But you also need a red candle. I really thought a red candle would be easy to come by but I couldn’t find one in the places I looked – I mean, does no one use dinner candles anymore? I did find them at the Dusk candle store but they are only red on the outside and are just plain white on the inside. Why???? The girl in the shop knew what I was doing and didn’t even warn me! At least she offered me a return, even though I had burned one and opened another.
In the end I used a scented one from the air freshener isle of the supermarket (Glade Blooming Peony & Cherry if you want to grab one). Why I didn’t think of that sooner I don’t know! Good on Mum for finding it! It worked well but you really need to let the candle burn and build up liquid wax for a good while (like 30mins or more) before pouring it off. Then leave it a good while again before pouring. At first I was pouring every few minutes and I made a hole in the candle that used up all the wick. I didn’t love this enough to melt the wax in a double burner, so I learned from my mistakes and bought a new one. If you plan to make a lot of these bleeding candles, it might be easier to have a few of the scented red candles and as a bonus, your house will smell awesome!
- Lay out some baking or grease proof paper to protect your work surface.
- Arrange the white candles on the paper and light the red candle.
- Drip red wax onto the white candles and allow to harden.
- Voila! Bleeding candles. Now the fun part is arranging them in your house!
Once I worked out what I was doing, this was a super easy DIY! And I happen think these are super cool! I know you love that I go through the pain of testing these DIY’s so you know how to get it right the first time – unlike me! And they are crazy easy once you know what you are doing. Yet quite effective and a little bit gross and strangely beautiful smelling. They are a nice touch for a Halloween party. Think how good they would look on a Halloween table with Brain Dip, Redrum Punch and Death By Chocolate Graveyard. If you are big on Halloween decorations and have turned your house into a house of horrors, I think these would be lovely in a bathroom for that extra touch of blood and viscera. Just don’t let the vampires get to them! Happy Halloween!
