All the women in my family love a good, relaxing bath (the ‘Bathe’ above is on Mummy Asks bathroom wall). I knew how much they would love this gift and I thought I’d make it for them, since it’s a nice, easy DIY. I made pretty big jars but smaller jars would be a lovely favor. All the ingredients are pretty easy to find. Epsom salts, bicarb, grapeseed or avocado oils and food colours are easily found in the supermarket. Sweet almond oil and essential oils can be found in health foods or holistic stores and online. Jars could be ones you’ve collected or bought, cheapy shops are a good place to look. You might get lucky and find the scoops in your travels but I just typed ‘wooden scoop’ into eBay and the spoons came from the local Asian grocery.
Speaking of ingredients, why these ones? Epsom salts are know for relaxing the nervous system, curing skin problems, soothing back pain and aching limbs, easing muscle strain, healing cuts, treating colds and congestion, and drawing toxins from the body. Bicarb softens hardened skin, soothes irritated skin, relieves itching and reduces burning sensation. You can completely customize the oils in the recipe to suit you. The oil is to provide moisture, I went with grapeseed because I had some on hand. The essential oil or oils are up to you, as long as your blend is 10 drops total. I used a pre blended mix of bergamot, geranium & patchouli for a anti anxiety effect. I get mine from here.  The food colour is completely optional but use the liquid kind.

  • 200g (approx. 3/4 cups) Epsom salt
  • 30g (approx. 1 3/4 tblsp) Bicarbonate Soda, well sifted
  • 1 tsp of Oil (Grapeseed or Sweet Almond or Avocado)
  • 10 drops of Essential Oil/s
  • 4-6 drops Liquid Food Colour (optional)
Add everything to a large bowl and whisk until combined. Or add everything to a large snap lock bag, close it and mush till combined. Pour into the jars .
For reference, each batch makes about 3/4 cup. I made a 10 x batch which was two 1kg boxes of Epsom salts and most of a 5ml bottle of essential oil. That was enough for two large jars, two small ones and six individual sachets.

Two are sublimely sarcastic and passive aggressive (Put some in your bath, obviously and Because you’re so “stressed”). Both my Mum and Sister loved these! And two more traditional ones (one with the oil blend I used and one that simply says Run A Bath & Relax). These come in purple, pink, orange, blue and green plus there is also a black and white version. I simply printed them out on light card stock, cut them out and punched a hole at the top. I thought simple twine was the best way to attach them.

I had some cellophane bags at home but I saw them in my cheapy shop where I picked up these sweet little party favor bags. For these ones I only used the ‘nice’ labels, I made them a little bit smaller than the other tags and printed them on sticker paper. The came out super cute! These ones are headed for my sewing group.

My girls loved this DIY! The scent was exactly what they wanted and both said they felt really pampered. I think this makes such a nice gift. I’ve printed extra labels so I can whip up a batch whenever a gift is needed. If you wanted to boost this into a bigger spa pack, you could whip up some Good Morning Body Polish and some Rosewater & Mint Facial Mist too. Happy Gifting xxxxx
