For me, Valentine’s Day is a weird celebration. Sure, love in all its forms is beautiful and deserves celebration. But just like weddings with huge overblown budgets, you might have pause to wonder what we are all doing it for. And why? And is it worth it? I’m not sure that there’s a place for in my relationship for this kind of fussy fluff. A big box of heart shaped chocolates is always welcome. But other than that, hearts are not me at all. Which is why you’re getting a bit of light gore with this stabbed anatomical heart!
And who says my Valentine has to be a human lover? Couldn’t it be the purest of all loves, platonic love? Or the deeply soul satisfying love of a cat or dog? Who invented this holiday anyway? Obviously, it was smug couples who thoughtfully created a day for single people to find love or be crushed by the ache of their own loneliness. I see the singles of China have rebelled and created ‘Singles Day’ or what translates to ‘Bare Sticks Day’, which happens on November 11. 11/11 get it? Sticks?
Anyway, you’re probably here for the cute t-shirt, not to hear me expound my personal theories on Valentine’s Day! So I started with a tshirt that I picked up for the bargain price of $3.50. Mr Ask helped me to create the design and then cut it from heat transfer vinyl (HTV) from here, using my Silhouette. I knew exactly how I wanted my design to look, so I explained it all to Mr Ask. To get the right size for each of the elements I measured my bust (just like the ‘cup depth’ measurement in this sweetheart tank tutorial) and made the height of the elements 70% of that measurement.
The heart was cut out of red HTV (why does red sorta smear?) and the text and scissors from plain silver (as in not the metallic kind). I weeded all the of designs and then I worked on the placement. I put the tee on and held up the heart and text until it was right. I used sewing pins to mark the corners where the backings were and used them to line everything up on the ironing board. I pressed the heart on first, then text and scissors last. I used my press cloth the whole time. And voila!
Now I have a cute, Valentines tee that I can wear year round! I am so in love with it! Mostly because it is my whole aesthetic and so cute but it’s a declaration of love to sewing. Learning to sew was the gift that has continued to sprinkle the glitter of happiness over my life. Sewing made my body a friend and not an enemy to be combated. Sewing has freed my creative soul and won my heart. Mother needle and thread, shiny scissor with a blade. I will feed you with fabric and clothe myself in your honour. You can see how this is my perfect Valentine! And sewing has also been my perfect Halloween! Sort of odd to honour sewing without doing any but hey!
It was my first time using different colours of HTV to make a design and I couldn’t be happier with how it came out! If you fancy making your own version, I am sharing the files below. Please be kind and reasonable. Use these designs for personal projects ONLY. If you’d like to make this and then sell it, please contact me and we can work it out. Remember that all artists (including Mr Ask) own the right to their work and stealing is not only wrong, it’s mean.
