Makeup Bootcamp

September 24, 2013
Makeup Bootcamp
I get a kick out of knowledge & learning. I always want to know what’s in the box. If I don’t know, I’ll find out. Even more so now that I can share my knowledge with you. If you read yesterday’s post (The Eyes Have It {Eyeliner & False Lashes for People Who Suck At That Like I Do}) you’ll know that it’s Glam Week and I’m not great with makeup. What’s a girl to do? Find a makeup artist and go to makeup bootcamp!
This whole idea came from the fact that I’ve never used foundation and when I’ve bought them, they were just so wrong! I’d considered a makeup counter consultation at Dior but worried that they’d just push product. I was moaning on to Mummy Ask about how the youtubes seem so easy until I try things on my own face. My eyes aren’t like that, my cheeks seem so different and Lordy pip, why can’t I find a foundation! I said to Mummy Ask “Why can’t I just call a makeup artist and have her show me the right colours and the places to put them? Surely a makeup artist will use MAC products and if I don’t want to pay for MAC I can google the ‘dupes’ for those colours and products”. Then I realized I could!!!

I called the lovely Gabrielle, a local makeup artist. She said she got a lot of these inquires and ran sessions on either a one on one or group basis at her Glengowrie SA studio. I managed to book a session with Gabrielle, for both Mummy Ask and myself, on Mummy Asks birthday for just $50 per person.

Gabrielle encouraged us to bring our brushes and anything we had and wanted to learn to use better. We were very excited! I definitely wanted to find a foundation for me and how to use it plus I wanted to know how/where to use blush because I love that freshly flushed look. Mummy Ask wanted solutions for older skin and how to make eye makeup work on her older, crepey lids.
We had a 9.30 appointment and Gabrielle had orange juice waiting for us, along with a cupcake each, Mummy Asks bearing a birthday candle!! We took a seat at our individual mirrors and we started out with primer. With this and each step Gabrielle explained why you would put on this type of product, the exact product she was using and what may be similar. Also, the sort of brush to use and why!

On to foundation. I am very sweaty and a little oily, MAC NW20 was lovely on me and quite matte. Gabrielle put MAC NC25 on Mummy Ask but Mummy Ask wasn’t keen on the matte finish and felt it settled into her wrinkles in a cakey way. Gabrielle really wanted us to be happy with our finished looks, so she wiped that right off, primed again then tried MAC Face and Body in N2. Mummy Ask loved this!

We then learned the tricks of concealing (Dark circles and eye bags for Mummy Ask and red or dark pigmentation on me) with the Pro Pallette concealer. Next was eye primer, an eyeshadow base colour and a natural smoky day look. This included smudgy liner and mascara. Then a little blush. I asked lots of questions about the blush and bronzer I brought with me.

Mummy Ask loves lippy but has worn the same one for years. She is one of those people who turn lipstick hot pink or bright orange. Gabrielle patiently tried several things but just couldn’t find the right one. I am loving orange and coral colours right now and put on MAC Cremesheen Lipstick in Ravishing. Mummy Ask gave it a try too and loved it!
Makeup Bootcamp
We waved goodbye to Gabrielle and I asked Mummy Ask what she wanted to do next and she said “Let’s go straight to MAC!”. We went straight to MAC Marion and bought foundation and lipstick. Of course their was not obligation to buy things. We both had a wonderful day and learned so much about how to make up ourselves. If you wonder how to do your makeup, then I highly recommend Makeup Bootcamp. And it would be great as a girly group activity, hens day or shower. If you would like to book in with Gabrielle, just click here but if you are not in South Australia, don’t be afraid to call a local makeup artist and inquire.
