Is anyone else super excited for apple season? We have been eating so many apples lately while they are in there peak, beautiful season. I try to buy seasonally because things taste better in season, it supports Australian producers and it’s a whole lot cheaper. All summer long I gorged on pineapples and berries but as soon as it got cool Mr Ask was looking for apples. We both love apples and we have a few varieties that we usually buy but there have been some disappointing moments. So much so, that last year we drove into the hills to apple growing country to stock up.
The best thing ever about blogging, is sometimes you get to hear about things first! I got an email from Modi apples, a new variety of apple being stocked exclusively by Coles and I was so excited to try them. Yes, I am 100% excited by free apples! I got my apples and they looked gorgeous but as we all know, it’s the taste that matters. They are lovely crisp kind of apple, no mealiness at all. Sweet but tart too and just what I want in an eating apple I don’t plan to cook. I was an instant fan! To the point that Mr Ask thought I was a little weird for being so into a specific kind of apple. But then he tried them and totally got it. Mum wanted to know what all the fuss was about too and I gave her a few to eat and she loved them! So my PR pack of 5kg of apples was eaten before I even had time to blog them! Well played Modi, you have built in fans before I even got to talk about it!
Modi are a great eating apple and I could literally talk about that but I have to have some foodie fun too. Apples in general are a perfect snack on their own but if you know me, you know that I am always putting stuff on toast! Yes, even apples! Mum keeps asking me to write a round up of my ‘things on toast’ but I never seem get to it. It was the perfect excuse to share with you how I put apples on toast all the time. If you follow my Instagram, you may have seen these ideas already in lots of old posts but I never shared the how to. Since these aren’t exactly complicated recipes, I thought I’d put both of my fave apple toasts in one post.
First up is one of my very favourite breakfasts – Apples & almond butter on toast! It’s so easy guys, just throw some almond butter on the toast of your choice (I had a dark rye) and add some crunchy apple slices. Breakfast has never been easier. It’s a crazy simple recipe but OMG it tastes so amazing! It makes a healthy breakfast with loads of protein from the almond butter and the apple has fibre, antioxidants & phytonutrients. I like an almond butter that is just almonds with no added sugar, salt or oils. Modi apples are nice and crisp which makes them just right for this toast. I am not a sweet tooth and I love this just as it is but you can certainly add a sprinkle of cinnamon or go all out with a drizzle of maple syrup. Better for you than pancakes and quicker too!
If you have a sandwich press at work, this sandwich is a gamer changer! Toasted apple, mustard & cheddar sandwiches are the lunch of queens! Just butter up your bread of choice, shmear on some mustard, add some chunky apple slices and a good, aged cheddar, top with your second slice and press till golden. Ahh yeah! Tangy, tart, sweet and melty. Apples and cheese are always a wonderful pairing but that mustard really makes the whole thing just so much better. I am partial to Australian style mustard, it’s more that Dijon and less that Hot English and a tiny bit seedy but you can roll with whatever you have to hand. But you need to choose your apple wisely or you will have a bad time. Modis are crisp, sweet, tart and even though they are an ‘eating’ apple, they don’t become mealy with a little heat. They have a tender skin that is so right in a beautiful, oozy, cheesy bite.
I think sometimes apples get a bad rap because we have flashbacks to bruised apples in our lunch box but apples can be quite sophisticated. They make an excellent cheeseboard accompaniment or when dipped in a little cinnamon sugar (or caramel dip) they become a sneaky dessert or just with some almond butter for dipping. And honestly, they are delicious! Had to take a cheesy, me and a bowl of apples shot beacuse I was wearing a my fave monstera earrings and headband – the green and the red are so pretty! Plus the snow white vibes and we made it without any ‘doctor away’ jokes! Modi are my go to because they are amazing! Zesty, tangy, just the right amount astringent. They have a thin skin that doesn’t seem tough to the tooth and I really enjoy how the sweet and sharp and fresh plays. I love it when someone prepares fruit for me and I was loving these Modi apples enough to buy an apple slicer! It’s the height of lazy but I think I love it! I have so many recipe ideas for apples! Knockoff Maccas deep fried apple pies are high on my list. Do you want to see more apple recipes?
Disclaimer: I received free apples and some money to make this post. As always, the thoughts are mine and reflect my honest opinions. It’s pretty hard to be unenthusiastic about a great apple. Fruit is a natural product and of course they vary but I actually love the Modi as a variety and none have been anything short of delicious. And it’s nice to be paid a couple of bucks for writing about something that is wonderfully good. Go buy some apples.
