I am absolutely in love with my new cake mascara! If you are not familiar with cake mascara, check out my Lashings Of History, The Story Of Mascara post. When I decided to give cake mascara a try, Longcils was very highly regarded and also the only brand I could find here in Australia. Longcils has been making cake mascara since 1950 and was a favourite of Marylin Monroe. I believe that cake mascara is still the preference of some makeup artists working on film and tv as it can be very natural when applied lightly (great for men too) and is almost completely clump free (great for close ups).
The mascara comes in a little mirrored compact with the mascara cake and a toothbrush style brush inside. You can either a drop of water to the cake directly or dampen the brush. You then rub the brush on the cake to make a paste and apply. Some people dislike the brush that comes with it and use a mascara spoolie but I much prefer the brush that it comes with. I find the brush makes it easy to build up the product for quite dramatic lashes and I think it gives nice lash separation too.
The formula contains beeswax and rose water and is said to be great for sensitive eyes. Longcils claim that this mascara is water resistant and I’d have to agree it stands up quite well. It feels lovely and soft on the lashes, not at all crunchy like mascara, even after makeup remover my lashes were very soft and clean but still quite black. It washes off false lashes very easily, I would really recommend it for people who like to mascara after they’ve put on false lashes. I’ve had no issues with flaking or clumping. A quick swipe will leave you with a natural look that goes right to the tip (I think it’s the brush) but you can build some serious lashes with it. Mummy Ask used this mascara in the 60’s and remembered building up some impressive lashes with it. She recommended pressing and wiggling the brush with it at the lash line and sweeping back firmly away from the eye to set curl into the lashes. I have it a go and it worked very well. If you’d like to see it in action, check out the vid from Kate Champagne below (if you’re in a hurry, start at 2:15).
I hope you enjoyed this review, I thought it was something a little different. Do you remember cake mascara? Have you used it? Would you like to try it? Let me know in comments or on Facebook. If you’d like to buy this, Beauty Encounter & The Cure Shop sell this and ship to Australia. I’ve also seen Longcils on Fishpond and eBay xxxxxxx
