I’ve always has a Carmen Miranda thing going! I gave my friends and family the giggles when I told them I bought some mini fake fruits for crafting purposes. You are yet see those plans! And I’ve loved the idea of shoe clips for forever but I only just got around to making some. Just think of the possibilities! You have to say that in your head to the tune of ‘Becky, look at her butt’. Mummy Ask thought I was being silly when I said I wanted to make these but she indulged me as I made them at her house. As soon as I was done, she wanted to play with them (see all the various Mum shoe pics!) and ordered some for herself! Yeah, these shoe clips are cool!
As a person who can sew, I naturally thought to sew these but you could completely go with glue. That said my instruction are for sewing and I made a few pitiful bows before I nailed this method!
You can buy shoe clip blanks from ebay (I couldn’t find mine and my kind Sis in Law gave me some of hers – thanks Marg!). I bought some pineapple cabochons, cherry buttons and strawberry embroidered, iron on patches from ebay to decorate. I bought some 1.5″ cheap, crappy, satin ribbon from my local cheapy shop and I used a needle, thread and Tarzan grip to put it together.
I cut 8″ ribbon sections of ribbon and lightly melted the cut ends with a lighter, you could use fray check instead.
I overlapped the cut ends by 1cm ish and used a hair sectioning clip to keep it still while I crappily hand stitched the ribbon into a circle. Be sure to trim your threads close!
I squinched the centre together into a bow shape, used hair clips to kinda keep that shape and used my needle to stab up the centre.
Once I was though I would the still attached thread around the cinch a few times, jabbed up the centre again and tied my thread off in the back – but don’t cut the thread yet!
Take the shoe clip and hand sew it on the the back, similar to a button, tie of your thread and cut the tails close.
If you are using a button on the front, go ahead and sew it. If you are using a cabochon or embroidered patch, glue it with the glue. Be sure you have things up the right way! I clipped my clip to a business card for gluing in case extra glue made the clip glue shut.
Wait for them to dry and you have fabulous! I chose these flats because they have a matte, faux suede texture and they are perfectly plain. Plus they were only $7 from Big W and cheap ass flats have never looked this good! This Me Made May, I wanted to focus on wearing more of the accessories I’ve made. I have been getting good use out of my hair pins but these shoe clips have been a good addition too! I am hooked on the possibilities! I’ve already made a few nautical ones, keep your eyes out for that. If you make some of these, I’d love to see them so share a pic on Facebook or Instgram xxxx
