Sew: DIY Ruffle Tee Tutorial

August 9, 2012
Mummy Ask is one of those people who finds a tee and buys one in every colour. Which is fine, until she decides she doesn’t like them. That’s about $60 worth of tees headed for the op shop.  I thought a makeover was in order!
We started out with four of Mummy Asks tees and one of Mr Asks old black tees.

I used my trusty clear ruler and some yellow chalk and marked out 6 strips on Mr Asks old tee. We made ours 1 inch wide for a skinny ruffle but you can make yours as wide as you like. I made sure to chop off the hem on the black tee, so it is not part of any of my strips. So, now that you have your strips (well they are still circles at the moment) trim the seam off on one side so you have long strips.

To make this pleated ruffle, I just pleated and pinned by eye until it looked right. I then stitched straight down the middle with a straight stitch, removing pins as I went. It’s the ruffles marked 1 below.

To make the ruffle marked number 2 I set my machine to its longest, straight stich setting and stitched down the centre of the strip without any back stitching. I then carefully pulled the bobbin thread to gather the strip.

The ruffles marked 3 were made by changing my overlocker tension. My needles were set to 5.5, loopers to 3 and my differential feed to 2. The change in tension gathered my strips for me.

This is what happens when I leave the room to sew! I stitched the ruffles to the tee fronts by sewing over the line I’d used to make the ruffles.
I had some super cute buttons that we thought would look sweet. Mummy Ask is a champion at hand sewing so she had the buttons on in a jiff.

This grey tee has the bobbin thread gather ruffle.

This is an overlocker ruffle and a diamanté button I found in Spotlight.

This white tee has an overlocker ruffle and cute little ladybird button that I bought on eBay.

I just adore this tee! A pleated ruffle and some swallow buttons from eBay.

These took no time to make and were such fun! Mummy Ask is thrilled with her tees and loves that she has something personalized. These are so fun and easy, even if you can barely sew you’ll mange these xxx
