After some intense sewing, making a last minute prom style dress for my Niece (there will be a post on that saga),I thought I’d try a wrist pincushion and of course I wanted to make it myself. I made this very simply and left some raw edges, if you want to keep yours tidy you can sew the circles right sides together, hand sewing the gap shut once stuffed and the wrist band to the cushion.
First, cut two circles of fabric around 9-10cm in diameter.
Then cut some elastic to a length that will allow the pin cushion to fit firmly on your wrist and fit easily over your hand. I used some wide, yellow fold over elastic I bought on ebay but any elastic will do. Stitch the cut elastic ends together, with a zig zag stitch, so the elastic forms a circle.
Pin the elastic circle to the centre on the right side of one of the fabric circles and stitch down with a zig zag stitch. You should have one circle of fabric forming the base of your cushion with the elastic wrist strap attached.
Place your circles wrong sided together and pin. Top stitch the two circles together with a straight stitch , about 6mm from the raw edge. Be sure to leave a small gap in the stitching for stuffing.
Stuff the pin cushion with batting or fibre fill and sew the gap closed by hand stitching or machine stitching.
You can use any decorative trim you like (lace, ribbon) but I used some yellow jumbo rick rack. Stitch the rick rack on to the edge of the pincushion with a zig zag stitch. The zig zag should keep things from fraying too much but feel to treat any areas you are worried about with fray check.
