If you have been reading for a while you know that I’m a crazy cat lady but I adore Mummy Asks dogs, Zac & Reg. They are amazingly cute and they came from SA Dog Rescue. The SA Dog rescue people (I’m looking at you Dee & Amy) were simply amazing through the process. Seriously, click those links and have a read!
Anyway, I’ve sewn a couple of things for Zac & Reg (a designer dog bed and then these matching dog coats) and decided it was time to give something back to SA Dog Rescue. I had these in mind for ages but I was to lazy to hand cut a stencil for the ‘adopt me’ part. However, I recently bought a second hand Silhouette cutting machine and used it to cut heat transfer vinyl for the lettering part. Of course, you could just put your pets name or leave the lettering off entirely.
If you aren’t a sewing type, you can buy one, handmade by me here.
If I was making these for regular use (like for Mums boys) I probably would have used a light/medium weight cotton but as these would get a good bit
of use, I went with a light cotton drill. All of mine came from Tricia’s, where we have our sewing meeting. I actually cut these out at our meeting too. I was going to use snaps as the closure but Velcro is more reversible and easier to put on a dog who is wriggling in excitement!
My fluffy models were happy to help! Zac and Reg are very close in size, they are both a small in these bandanas but I put Reg in a medium by just folding the front edge a little. And there are pics of them wearing them around the neck and around their middles. All of this proves that the bandanas are super flexible and can work for a range of dogs and sizes. And I’m pretty sure that you would find any cutie irresistible in this get up! I picked colours and patterns that were unisex and (in my opinion) pretty jaunty! If you fancy a custom version for your dog, check out my etsy store. I love this project and I really hope that it’s useful for SA Dog Rescue. If all the cute dog pics have put you in the adoption mood, head over to SA Dog Rescue.

Rather than mess around with a pattern, I decided to mark a square directly on to the fabric. I then marked a diagonal line, dividing the square into two triangles. That’s perfect for making one bandana that’s the same on both sides. I decided to cut another square so I could make two bandanas with two different fabrics. As far as sizing goes, I made 2 of each size.
Small: 14″ square
Medium: 18″ square
Large: 22″ square
One my triangles were cut, I laid two triangles right side together and stitched around all three sides, leaving a turning gap big enough for my hand. I used a 1/4″ seam allowance and didn’t bother to pin but pin if you prefer.
I trimmed the seam allowance around all three corners and turned the bandana right side out. I tried to point out the corners nicely. The all the seams got a good press and I tucked in the seam allowance of the gap in too.
Once I had everything pressed, I topstitched around the whole bandana, closing the turning gap in the process. I positioned the Velcro (making sure I had in the right place to meet!) and stitched around in a box with an x in the middle.
For the lettering, I used my very newly acquired, second hand Silhouette (more on that here) to cut some heat set vinyl from here. You don’t need a Silhouette to use the vinyl, you can hand cut it. Just make sure the lettering is mirrored so that it turns out the right way when ironed on! And then voila!

P.S. There’s no kick back for me, of any kind. I just wanted to support a great, local, no kill dog charity and help them find homes for all the great dogs that need one. Could you really day no to these two? Well, these two are taken but there are plenty more that need love. If there is anything you should buy second hand, it’s pets. You think you are rescuing them but they will rescue you xxx
