Sew: Super Simple Sheer Shirt

September 10, 2012

I have been loving the oversized sheer top trend. I think it looks so chic! I have tried on a number of these tops but they looked awful on me. Sadly, I am not tall, willowy  and feather light. What I am is a full of curves and I sorta look like the side of a house in these boxy tops. But I never take no for an answer!

I did what any girl would and turned to Pinterest and found this tutorial (please click through, not only will the tutorial give you heaps of info on making these sorts of tops but it’s a lovely site). I really liked the idea of tailoring in the top at my sides (anything nicely fitted will slim you down) but the sleeves are lovely and floaty and free. This is really, really easy guys, I’ve drawn a pic to show you how it’s done but the tutorial is more in depth.

I used 1m of stretch mesh in my top. I am an AU size 16-18, so you may want to use a little more or less to suit your size. This type of fabric can be a challenge to get flat so pin or double sided tape your heart out, just don’t sew through the tape as it will gum your needle. You want to use a stretch fabric so it goes on easily and can still be fitted. Use a stretch stitch or a zig zag so your stitches don’t pop as the fabric stretches when you put it on.

So, fold the fabric in half with selvedges together (the sort of finished edge the fabric has when you buy it).

Lay a tee that fits well in the middle, as shown. Use chalk or a sewing marker (test whatever you use on a scrap to check it comes out) to mark a line about 1.5cm away from the sides of the tee. If your tee curves in, just follow that line. Stitch up the lines you’ve marked.

Use your tee as a guide to mark where you are going to cut the neckline. Make sure it’s centred and carefully cut it out.

If you are happy to leave your edges raw (and you can as stretch doesn’t fray) then you are done!

To finish your edges you can either turn them over and sew a hem or if you have an overlocker you can roll hem the edges.I used the roll hem on my overlocker for this top.

I just love my new top and I made it 20mins before going to visit The Bestie. I’ve already ordered stretch mesh in some other colours to make more.
