Tip: Declutter your makeup

February 2, 2012

As I’m sure you all know I have a small house, which means clutter is my number one enemy. Our bathroom cupboard here is referred to as the salami cupboard as it’s so small and skinny the only thing it’s good for is hanging salami!

So I had a rag tag configuration of plastic containers and drinking glasses to store my makeup but no more! I found this fab acrylic container in Howards Storage World,  just perfect for girlie goodies. I think it looks quite tidy on our shelf but you could certainly put it in a cupboard if your allows.

I found lots of goopy, gunky, grungy things when I got to a good clean out and happily diced those things past their prime. Do you know how long you should keep your makeup? If, not I’ve put together a list for you….

  • Mascara: Toss your mascara after 3 months.
  • Eye pencils: Eye pencils can be kept up to 2 years. Be sure to sharpen before each application.
  • Eye shadows:  Liquid shadows should last 12 months. Powder shadows will keep 2 years.
  • Lipsticks: You can keep your lippys and your lip pencils for 2 years. As with eye pencils, sharpen your lip pencils before each use.
  • Blushes and powders: Chuck your cream blushes after a year, powder blushes and powders after 2 years.
  • Foundations and concealers:Moisturizing foundations and stick concealers can hang around for 18 months. A 12-month shelf life applies to both oil-free foundations, which can dry out quickly and liquid concealers.

If your makeup separates, dries out, or starts to look or smell funny, it’s definitely time to replace it. Using clean brushes and sponges will help lengthen the life of your cosmetics. Be sure to wash or replace your applicators frequently. If you have an eye infection, chuck out all your eye makeup, brushes and applicators as the bacteria can live in these items and reinfect.
