You guys know how much I love a little beauty DIY. I’ve posted a few beauty tips lately, like how to clean your make up brushes and then how to clean your hair brush but I am so excited about this one! It is simple, effective and frugal and even The Bestie can use this without an allergic reaction.
If you are a makeup lover you will know all about mineral powder foundations and finishing veils. But if you’re not sure, a mineral powder foundation provides coverage and a finishing veils sets your makeup. Mineral foundation I have, finishing veil I was looking for. So this face powder is like a translucent powder or finishing veil. There are lots of options and variables here. You can make this up to match your skin tone, just right for you – how cool is that? Plus it will only cost you a few cents!

I did some research into the main components in commercial finishing veils and found that the most common were – silk powder, white rice powder, cornflour & arrowroot powder. The last two were already in my kitchen (arrowroot is a gelling agent, found in the baking isle) and the others are easily available on eBay or soap/cosmetic suppliers. I hear that arrowroot was preferable to cornflour so that’s what I went with but any of the above will work well. Please don’t try baby powder as I have seen elsewhere, it is really not recommended for the face. It’s been known to cause breakouts and dryness, amongst other things.
These are all white powders, so unless you are very pale, they might leave you lighter than you’d like. There are a few easy colouring options, cocoa, cinnamon & nutmeg can make a lovely tint that you can customize to your skin tone. Or you could add some too dark mineral powder or even a broken bronzer or eyeshadow. If you are using bronzer or eyeshadow, you will need to grind it up to a fine powder.
You’ll need something to keep your powder in. Recycling an old container is the easiest, just give it a good clean and dry. You can also buy little sifter jars on eBay.

It’s as simple as mixing it all up! Add your white powder base to a small bowl. How much depends on how much you want to end up with & the size of your container. I used 1 tablespoon of Arrowroot.

Add very small amounts of your colourant and stir. Build up to your desired colour. I used 1/2 a teaspoon of cocoa and a pinch of cinnamon.

Stir really well, breaking up any small lumps. Scoop into your container and you’re done!
I will have a DIY blush post up soon, so pleased stay tuned! In the meantime, why don’t you come and visit me on Facebook xxxx
