We have all had that moment you try everything to open a jar with no success. I have been known to put it in the counter and stare at like somehow the power of my mind will make it magically open! There are plenty of jar openers sold in shops but somehow I don’t own one because they seem sorta useless when I’m in the shop and then I wish I had bought it when I can’t open a jar. If jars are hard to open, here are four ways to get the job done using stuff you have at home:
- Gently bang on the lid a few times with the blunt end of a butter knife before opening, to release the seal.
- Hold the lid under the hot tap before opening. The heat expands the metal. Open while still hot, using a tea towel to protect you hands from the heat.
- Put at thick rubber band around the lid to increase your grip before opening.
- Slide a butter knife alongside the glass of the jar, under the edge of the lid and apply gentle twisting pressure until you hear the seal pop.

Hi Sarah,
I use the rubber gloves I use when washing the dishes. They allow you to get a good grip and have worked for me every time!! Cheaper than buying a gadget too 🙂
