Always keep brown sugar in a good quality airtight container, I favour Tupperware as it has a good seal.
You can buy terracotta brown sugar savers but I’ve not seen them in Australia. A very small terracotta pot saucer from the hardware will work exactly the same. Just soak in water for 15mins, dry with a clean tea towel and put in your brown sugar container.
This will help to keep it soft and moist.
Another alternative is to throw in a couple of marshmallow which will act similarly
