Tip: Running Hot & Cold – Why You Need A Water Cooler

Tip: Running Hot & Cold - Why You Need A Water Cooler
Okay, this may seem like an odd tip (and I’m not getting paid by the water company!) but for some reason everyone always marvels at our water coolers and I thought you might want to hear about how cool they are. In fact, Mummy Ask was showing off some pics of a new dress with her water cooler in the background – forget the dress, everyone wanted to know about the water cooler!

Both Mummy Ask and I have water coolers that provide both hot & cold spring water. The cold comes out at 2-3 C and the hot is about 90C for safety. The hot also has a little child safe latch to prevent accidental scalds although temps below 92C are far less likely to cause second or third degree burns than anything above.

Why we love ours –

  • There is always cold drinking water
  • It frees up room in the fridge
  • It frees up bench space, no more kettle
  • Tea & coffee are almost instant
  • It’s the perfect temp for brewing tea or coffee according to the experts
  • It makes it so easy to drink your water
  • Kids love to serve themselves, a great way to get them drinking enough water
  • It’s great to have very hot or cold water for the kitchen to dissolve stock powders or to mix cornflour
  • It doesn’t create the waste that bottled water creates
  • Great for renters who can’t install filter taps, just take your cooler when you move

I know that you’re already thinking cost so I have some figures for you. Please bear in mind that these are figures from the company I use in Adelaide and costs will vary.Neverfail tell me that a hot/cold unit costs $0.03/day to run, less than $11/yr.Rental of a hot/cold unit starts at $140/yr or can pay it monthly at $13/mth. An 11L bottle of water is $7.70 although you can decide not to have it delivered and use one of those refilling machines that are at some service stations if you prefer. What’s also wonderful is that they deliver the cooler and service it or replace it if anything goes wrong. There are also a few colours/styles to choose from to suit your decor.

I wouldn’t be without my water cooler, it just makes life so much easier! We get our water delivered (they lug it right up my stairs to my front door) and so I never run out. I actually rent a three bottle stand ($16.50/year) from the water company and have it outside my front door on the landing, so it’s always tidy. I love having super cold water in the summer heat and still having room for all my delicious salads in the fridge!
