In my travels around the web I’ve been looking at a lot of info on fabric softener and I’m grossed out!
Now I haven’t used fabric softener for years as a washing machine repairer told me it was bad for the machine.
What I didn’t realize is that fabric softener is mostly horse or cattle fat that has been chemically altered with powerful chemicals (I’ve read some awful stories of chemical burns in manufactur) and has had perfumes added. This glues the fibres in the clothes down so they feel smooth.
Adelaide has hard water. So instead of commercial products I use 1/2-1 cup of white vinegar in every wash which softens and deodorizes the clothes. It will also help with stain removal. No, they won’t smell like vinegar!
If you like fabric softener because it reduces static cling, just moisturise well before wearing static prone clothes and the problem is solved.
To remove fabric softener stains, just re-wet the fabric and rub a bar of mild soap on the mark. Rinse and rewash.
EDIT: I have since found a fabric softener that is safe to use, details here.
