I know, I know, I know! A washing machine cleans things, how come I need to clean it too? Basically they get icky – soap, fabric softener, minerals, lint and sometimes mildew can build up. And if you don’t get to it you can end up with smelly clothes, instead of fresh, clean laundry. Plus, think of all the filth that gets swilled around in there, ick! It’s pretty easy to do and I have instructions for top and front loaders.
[break]
- Add 1 cup of bleach and nothing else to the machine on the HOTTEST temperature and run it through a it’s fullest, longest cycle. If you have a top loader toy can let the cycle start to mix the bleach through the water and then stop it and allow to soak for 30mins before running the rest of the cycle. Most front loaders have a tub clean cycle you can use for this.
- Clean out any lint filters and under the seals on on front loaders.
- Remove any parts that are removable and wash in warm soapy water. Some top loaders have removable fabric softener or bleach trays and front loaders will have a removable soap/softener/bleach tray.
- Put everything back together. Add 1 cup of vinegar and 1/2 cup of bicarb to the machine. Once again run through the fullest, longest, HOTTEST cycle.
- Mix up a solution of 1 part vinegar and 1 part water and use a clean cloth to clean the exterior of the machine and anywhere that would not have gotten cleaned by the normal cycle.
- Stand back and admire your fresh smelling, germ free machine. And remember to do this every 3 months to keep it that way xxx
