Spring has arrived! Oh my how I wanted to say it sprung lol! Spring is such a wonderful time of year—it’s the season of change, of renewal and rejuvenation.
It’s also a great time to give your home a clean and wipe away all the dust and the cobwebs. I know I that I advocate for Autumn cleaning, rather than the trad spring clean but at any time of year, there are few things as satisfying as a good spring clean! Ask Mummy Ask, she just loves a good chuck out! It need not be a huge undertaking that overwhelms, just make sure to tackle one task at a time.
- Put your winter clothes into storage.
This is the first item on the list. No joke, I went through my drawers just this week! Once it starts to warm up, your wardrobe is due for an overhaul—you won’t be needing those chunky winter jackets or those loose, soft sweaters (one thing that’s always difficult to say goodbye to) for a while! Consider buying some quality boxes for storage while you’re at it so that your clothes will be safe and out of the way.
It’s time to break out the sandals, skirts and summer dresses. OMG my shoes are always the hardest! There are always a few that need chucking before I box the others up. Plus an emotional return of last year summer hits. This is also a good time to completely reassess your wardrobe! Don’t be afraid to sort through your clothes to see what needs to be saved and what could probably be tossed or donated. There’s no use in letting your clothes collect dust! Also, a great excuse for a shopping trip!
Go through your clothes and try to clear away the things you know you haven’t worn in a while, things that might be worn out (faded, torn or no longer a good fit) and set them aside. If you no longer have a use for them, get rid of them! There’s no better feeling than that of a recently-spruced closet! Again, just ask my Mum. Throwing away stuff is the fastest way to lose weight!
- Flip your mattress (and get some new sheets!)
Mattresses should ideally be flipped four times a year. Or turned if you have the non flippy kind. Not only is this good for your back but it ultimately gives your mattress a longer life and keeps it from wearing. This is important because mattresses can get pricey! Spruce up your bed while you’re at it and buy yourself a new set of sheets to compliment the new season! As you will see from my Instagram, I am crushing on bright pastels right now. I kinda like the Miami beach vibe and let’s be honest, my cat’s look gooood on those colours…
- Sort through your makeup.
Believe it or not, makeup has an expiration date (I wrote a post on it too). So, if you’re hanging on to that metallic eyeshadow gifted to you five years ago for the ‘right night’, it’s probably swept right past is usability. Find what you haven’t used in a long while (or ever) and give it a toss. This will also give you the chance to replenish your shelves and splurge on new and interesting products you’ve always wanted to try. I am making an order for those foiled shadows right now!
- Deep clean your bathroom.
Pay close attention to all that grout and hard-to-reach mould growing in your shower. Give your bath a good scrub and your floors a good mop (I have some bathroom hacks here and here). This is also a great chance to go through all the products currently in your cabinets. Throw away out-of-date products and get rid of those empty shampoo bottles still living in the back of your shower! Switch out what kind of body wash or soap you’re using for a seasonal change and consider replacing your loofah! Actually, just chuck your old one and wait for the post I have coming soon, on the best ever loofah thing!
- Dust everything!
And make sure you open your windows before you start! Take a feather or microfibre duster to everything you can reach, even your blinds and the tops of your windows! Make sure you dust the tops of your cabinets, wardrobes and mirrors—as well as display surfaces, and the very back of your desk. Dust collects everywhere and the sooner you clear it away, the better!
- Clean your windows.
It’s going into summer and you’re going to want to have your windows open to make the most of it! Clean off both sides to really let the sunshine in and don’t be afraid to spend a few extra dollars on a glass cleaner you know is a decent product. A clean window can make a world of difference! If you are a Rapunzel like me (trapped upstairs with no way to clean my windows) consider hiring a pro. I do it every other year and it is so worth it!
Just work through every item on this checklist and you will feel so much better! Feel free to add a few additional steps of your own! Once you’re done, you can officially sit back and enjoy these last few weeks of cold because you’ve earned it! Make sure to rope in some help if you can. Whether it’s a friend, partner or roommate—because tackling this alone can be difficult. Mum always helps with any wardrobe sorting because she gets a weird contact high from making things orderly! I tackled the pantry on my own because I’m super specific about that sort of thing. And a terrible ‘cat meets makeup’ thing happened and it caused a whole bunch of broken, which in turn got me to tidy through my collection to destash, depot and throw out. Mr Ask and I worked through the rest of the list last weekend. In fact, I even took my kitchen knives to be sharpened – I am on it! And you can be too xxx
