Summary: I think everyone has their own version of mac and cheese, it is the perfect comfort food and a specialty of Mr Asks. Creamy carbs topped with crispy cheese is my idea of heaven! You can dress this up with added extras like chopped spring onion or bacon or keep to the basic recipe.
Ingredients
- 250g dried macaroni
- 2 tblsp butter
- 2 tblsp flour
- 1 1/2 cups milk
- 4 slices of bread
- 2 cups tasty or cheddar cheese, grated
- 1/2 cup parmesan cheese, grated
- pinch cayenne
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp pepper
Instructions
- Pre heat oven to 180C
- Cook macaroni to packet directions, drain and set aside.
- Melt the butter in a saucepan and add flour and cook for around 3 mins, stirring often. Add milk and whisk until mixture becomes thick and bubbly. Add salt, pepper, cayenne and 2/3 of all the cheeses, whisk until cheeses are melted and turn off heat.
- Mix cheese sauce into the macaroni and pour into a greased baking dish (the bigger the dish, the thinner the macaroni layer and the more cheesy topping there is!).
- Remove the crust from the bread and cut bread into 1 cm cubes. Scatter bread cubes and remaining cheeses over the top of the macaroni and bake for 30 minutes or until browned on top and hot through.
