I often say how lucky we are to live the fine state of South Australia. People from other States mock and jeer, calling Adelaide a big country town filled with country bumpkins. Maybe some of that was true for a time but have you seen us lately? We are packed with amazing eateries, top notch restaurants and and bars. Adelaide (and it’s surrounds) enjoys a plethora of perfect produce and a majority of our restaurants are farm to table. Not to mention the abundance of quality wines, beers and spirits – many are award winning and sought after the world over. If you haven’t visited us, you should put it on your to do list!
As an avid cook and frequent restaurant diner, I’d have to say this is the best place to be in the whole world! Which is why I was practically panting with excitement when I opened my post box to find this amazing book, Flavours of South Australia! This beautiful tome was sent to my in this cute mailer, straight from Smudge Publishing. It is a gorgeous book! Hardcover with a removable jacket, 500 + pages on a mix of matte & glossy paper and a definite weight.
I actually rushed home from the post office to check out what was inside! It is a lovely journey through more than 120 restaurants, wineries and producers of SA. There are so many great photographs (some taken by The Hungry Australian, I believe) depicting locations from the Barossa, McLaren Vale, Southern Flinders Ranges, Limestone Coast and Kangaroo Island. If I didn’t live here, I would feel like I’d taken a wonderful holiday. But since I do live here, I was excited to say “I’ve been there”, “The food was great there”, “Do you remember that time we went there for my birthday?” and “That was the best holiday!”. Of course, the food and beverage game is strong here and that means I now have a list of places to try!
Not only does Flavours of South Australia share the low down on where to eat and drink, it’s a cook book too! Yes, the contributing restaurants have shared the recipes for their signature dishes. So even in you aren’t here in SA, you can taste a little anyway. I really do love that! It’s not only a great addition to my cookbook collection, it is almost a time capsule. This sort of quality book will stay on my bookshelf and I know it will be interesting to look back on it years from now and remember this time. The time when Adelaide became known as not only the ‘festival state’ but the ‘food & wine state’.
I really think you should come and visit the fair state of South Australia but in the meantime, you should check out Flavours of South Australia. You can buy this great masterpiece at each of the featured locations and at all good bookstores.
I did not receive any compensation for this post, although I received the book for free. As always, it was my choice to write a post or not and all opinions are mine. Seriously, Adelaide is Awesome!
