Summary: Crusty French bread, golden melty cheese and soft, delicate onions – my idea of heaven! This makes a great brunch dish or light meal and you can even cheat and use a jar or two of caramelized onions to save time. This is a weekend fave in the Ask House, perfect for all day picking. You can also cut the French stick into thin rounds for individual servings.
Ingredients
- 3 tblsp garlic olive oil
- 6 large red onions, thinly sliced
- 1 tblsp brown sugar
- 1/2 cup pizza/pasta sauce
- 300g grated cheese – a blend is nice
- 1 long baguette or French stick
Instructions
- Pre heat the oven to 180C.
- Add the oil, onions and brown sugar to large frypan and cook on a medium heat for 45 mins, stirring often. You want to cook the onions gently, so the soften and caramelize.
- Spread the pizza sauce in a thin layer over the cut side of the French stick.
- Top the bread with lots of onions and then grated cheese.
- Bake for 10-15mins or until cheese is lightly browned.
