As Mr Ask is the sole meat eater of our house, even a small roast has left overs. Left over roast is often eaten cold, in toasties and occasionally makes an appearance in fried rice but now and again Me Ask fancies it warmed up. There are tons of ways to do it but which ever you choose, make sure the meat is heated to 75C for food safety. Best way to check is by inserting a meat thermometer into the thickest part. These are my tried and true methods:
- Oven – Pre heat oven to 180C. Slice the meat and lay on a lightly greased tray. Drizzle with a little oil and cook for around 20mins or until internal temperature is 75C.
- Oven with Sauce – Pre heat oven to 180C. Slice the meat and lay in a casserole dish. Cover with sauce and cook for around 20mins or until internal temperature is 75C.
- Microwave – They key here is to try a only 2-3 minutes at a time and wait 5mins between removing from the microwave and testing the internal temp. Repeat until temp is 75C.
- Crockpot – Add the sliced or whole roast to the crockpot and cover with sauce or gravy, adding some water if needed. Cook on low for 3-4 hours.
- Steamer – Lay the sliced roast in a steamer and cook until internal temp is 75C.
Which method I use depends on how well cooked and moist the roast was in the beginning. I’ve heard many ways to reheat roast meats, including adding 1/2 a cup of water and a bed of iceburg lettuce to the bottom of a pot, laying the meat on top and reheating on the stove!! I haven’t tried that one but I can see that it would work. Please feel free to comment here or on facebook with your favourite method.
