I don’t know what’s happened to me lately but I’ve been on a homemade gift streak! Christmas is around the corner but this would be such a great housewarming or hostess gift too. And speaking of Christmas being around the corner, I’ve tried to keep this simple and quick. Because panic sewing a bunch of complicated gifts at the last minute is no fun. I know because I did that last year! I decided to tackle this project at my local ASG sewing meeting.
You’ll need:
1/2 metre of 112cm wide fabric
2.5 metres pom pom trim
6 metres 25mm or wider bias binding
Plus all the regular sewing supplies
Fold the fabric in half, so the selvages are together. If your design is directional, make sure you have the fabric the right way up. Use a dinner plate or other round object (I’m using this small platter) to mark a rounded corner at the bottom. Trim away the corner and the selvage edge.
Before adding the pom pom trim, we need to finish the raw edge. I used an overcasting stitch on my machine and made sure it was small enough to be hidden by the braid of the pom pom trim. You could overlock the edge or use a simple zig zag on your sewing machine. I was at my sewing meeting, so an overcast stitch was easy.
I switched to a zipper foot before attaching the trim, it makes it much easier to stitch around the pom poms. Just lay the trim so it overlaps the apron and stitch it down with a straight stitch. It can be a bit awkward to get around the pom poms, especially if you are new to them, so take it as slow as you need to.Next up, pleat! We need to reduce the length of the top edge of the apron to about 50-60 cm. You can go with whichever style makes you happy. I went with a single box pleat. Once you have the pleats pinned, run a basting stitch (longest stitch length, don’t backstitch) along the top to hold the pleats in place.
Cut the wide bias tape into 2 x 3m lengths – be sure they are even! Lay the two lengths ride sides together, if you want an angled end to your waist ties, trim them now. Sew the short edges together at each end. Turn right sides out and press. Topstitch along one of the long sides. Find the middle of the apron and the middle of the waist tie. Sandwich the apron between the two layers of the open side of the waist tie, matching the centers. Pin the apron into the tie, all the way along. Topstitch from one short end to the other.
And that’s it! You’re done! It was easy, wasn’t it? I love this cute little apron. There are so many cute fabrics, I could make heaps of these, couldn’t you? If you wanted to beef up this gift, you could make some matching pot holders and maybe some painted wooden spoons too. Happy sewing xxxx
