My Fave Vintage Inspired Lippies & How I Wear Them

September 25, 2013
My Fave Vintage Inspired Lippies & How I Wear Them
If you’re just tuning in, it’s Glam Week!!! So far I’ve posted The Eyes Have It {Eyeliner & False Lashes for People Who Suck At That Like I Do} & Makeup Bootcamp and now we are onto lips! I love lippy, it’s the one thing I won’t leave the house without. Even Gabrielle (the makeup artist who put me through Bootcamp) remarked on the way a bright lip brings my face to life. I guess I’ve been doing something right then! I adore a bold red lip but it’s not all I wear, I also love an orange lip. Vintage lipsticks came in a startling array of pinks, corals, oranges and reds. It’s not that I don’t like pink but I think reds and oranges just look more vintagey on me. There are four lipsticks/lip stains I reach for the most and just two liners:

Rimmel Lasting Finish in 170 Alarm
Coral Colours Moisturiser Lipstick in 819 Sunrise Red
Rimmel Lasting Finish by Kate Moss in 12
Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain in Rendezvous

Rimmel Exaggerate Lip Liner in 030 Natural
Rimmel Lasting Finish Lip Liner in 021 Red Dynamite

  • Rimmel Alarm (1) is my go to red for dramatic, nighttime looks. It’s a blue red in a cream finish that wears okay for such a bold colour. I tend to line my lips and fill in the whole lip with pencil before filing in with lippy for a super long wearing colour (with the red liner). This is what I’m wearing in the pic at the top of this post. In this video from Lisa Eldridge, she explains the technique for applying a perfect red lip.

  • For a slightly less dramatic or daytime red look I prefer the Coral Colours Sunrise Red (2). It’s a little more orangey and wears more softly. It’s a moisturizing formula and I feel it’s less harsh all round. I wear it with the red liner in the whole lip or just to line. Lining the whole lip gives this red a bit more oomph. I’m wearing it here

  • If I’m not feeling red or I’d like a more subtle look for day, I’m on to Rimmel’s Kate Moss 12 (3). I adore how orange this is, it’s not pink at all. I find that this can settle into the normal lines on my lips and look a bit almost separated at times. I much prefer the way it looks when I have lined my whole lip with the Natural liner. The Natural liner is quite creamy so I don’t find it drying. I’m wearing it here

  • There are days when a flick of mascara and swipe of lippy is as good as it gets! On those days, I’m loving this Revlon lip crayon balm/stain in Rendezvous (4). It feels like balm but has a good tint. It’s is a lovely orange colour that’s quite sheer but still pretty pigmented. I’m wearing it here

If you are thinking you can’t pull off orange, think again! It’s really really wearable. As with any colour group, you need to find the right one for you. Mummy Ask can’t quite do these two orange lips but loves Ravishing by MAC which is a bit softer.

I have been extremely sad lately, thinking that I can not rock a red lip 🙁 So I did what any wanna-be glam girl would do and bought up on a bunch of red lipsticks! I have finally found ways to wear them, what other makeup to wear them with etc…
By the way, you rock those orange tones like no body’s business.

Oh Red is for EVERYONE! I am afraid of n lip colour except nudes, I just look dead. When I went to see a makeup artist (Makeup Bootcamp post) I had a whole face of makeup on and it was time for lips – the makeup artist said “Oh wow! You just come alive with a strong lip!”. I have rosy lips naturally and nude colours always look wrong. Orange is my very fave right now, my MAC Saigon Summer arrived today and it’s a lovely orange.
