Sew: DIY Sweet & Sexy Nightgown and I’m on Hols!

September 2, 2013
Before I get to the nightgown, I just wanted you to know I’m taking a little holiday. My wedding anniversary is 3 September and Mr Ask has taken some time off work to hang out with me. We have a fancy dinner and a couple of nights in a hotel planned so I won’t be posting again until Friday Cocktail but I probably won’t be able to resist posting the odd thing to Facebook anyway. My little hotel frisk leads me nicely into this nightgown.

I love sexy bed wear but I still need it to be something I could answer the door in. If I’m home with no need to go out, I love wearing my pjs all day but hate scrambling for something more modest to answer a courier that will only wait 2 seconds before leaving one of those collection cards! Even in a hotel on holiday, I still want to be able to answer room service or sit on the balcony with a glass of wine. What makes sexy, well sexy, to me is something that gives me a nice flowy line and some sort of bust support. In fact the pattern I used is actually for a nursing bra/cami/nightgown! I am not even a little embarrassed about that either! The top ‘bra’ section crosses over to provide bust support. It was very hard to get a pic of because the neckline looks quite high on my dressform but is actually quiet deep when on. And if the fabric combo seem familiar, it’s because the nightie matches my big sexy knickers! The knicker sewing giveaway is still going so please head over and enter.

I basically followed the pattern but used picot lingerie elastic and a different application order.  I applied it by laying the flat edge of the elastic plush side up against the raw edge of the right side of the fabric. I used a three step zigzag to sew close to the picot edge, stretching the elastic to fit the fabric. I then flipped the elastic to the wrong side of the fabric and stitched it down with a three step zig zag. This is the same method I used on my big knickers, this tutorial demonstrates the technique.

I also added this stretch lace to the hem. I pinned the lace to the right side of the nightie, aligning the scalloped edge with the raw hem edge. At this stage the fabric is behind the lace. I used a three step zig zag and sewed along the flat edge of the lace. Once it was attached I trimmed away the fabric behind the lace, cutting close to the stitch line.

I am very pleased with the whole effect of this and would like to use the bodice of this for a few summer tanks. What do you like to wear for sleeping/lounging? Would you wear something like this?
