You may recall that the only cupboard in my bathroom is known as the salami cupboard because it’s so small and skinny! I posted about in a post on decluttering your makeup (it has a handy guide for how long to keep cosmetics). Well the salami cupboard has relocated to the other side of the big mirror and a new Ikea cupboard has taken it’s place. Here is a pic of it stuffed with goodies….
Now I’m super excited about this because I hate DIY. I know I seem to get up to a fair bit of it but anything that involves holes in walls and clambering into precarious spots with power tools or cupboards in hand seems scary. And it doesn’t always work out exactly as planned but this worked out perfectly! Now all my hair things are in the salami cupboard and all my cosmetics are stashed in the Ikea cupboard. See it really is a salami cupboard!
But before I could put all my pretty things away, I needed to do a thorough clean and tidy. I chucked a whole bunch of junk but realized just how many makeup brushes I posses (how many were ‘lost’ lol). And just how grungy they were. So, they all had a deep clean up. I did all of mine and it took only a few minutes. Remember that every time you use a brush you put oil, product and bacteria on it – not to mention dust if they are kept in the open. Keeping your brushes clean keeps your face clean too!

Daily Cleaning
- Keep some witch hazel in a spray bottle (you may do this already if you read this post on reducing facial sweating).
- After you use a brush, spray it with witch hazel and rub it gently back and forth on a paper towel.
- Repeat until no colour comes off on the towel.

Deep Cleaning
This should be done every week or two, depending on how often you use your brushes. Be careful not to wet the metal clasp that holds the bristles in too much. Water that is trapped under there can weaken the glue holding the bristles and cause them to fall out.
- Put a drop or two of baby shampoo (or dishwashing liquid but it is less gentle) in the palm of your hand.
- Wet the brush with lukewarm water and swirl the bristles in the shampoo in your palm.
- Rinse under running water until the water runs clear. Be sure to remove all the shampoo, feel the bristles to check.
- Lay on a clean towel or on paper towel to dry overnight. It’s important not to store them wet or put them upright while wet as that can cause water to get under the metal clasp.
See, that was super easy! And now you have nice, clean brushes ready for action.
